As someone who was depressed, for over 30 years (but now recovered), I heartily recommend Laughter Yoga as an effective therapy for depression. Have you ever seen a depressed five year old? Of course not… because a five year old doesn’t have any hang-ups, or emotional baggage. An hour of Laughter Yoga is like an hour of being five years old again. We depress ourselves by thinking too much, and over-using the left side of our brain. Laughter Yoga short-circuits this process by stopping us from thinking, and shutting down the left side of our brain almost completely. The result is, we feel more connected to the universe, to each other, and to the abundant happiness we felt as children. No matter how you came to the class, you always leave it feeling energised and happy… a natural emotional high that lasts all day. And it’s a great way of making friends, too. You know all those mental barriers you carry around in your head, that keep you feeling separate, and isolated from other people? All of those barriers magically disappear, once you’ve had a laugh with someone. You can’t keep them in place while you’re laughing, any more than you can laugh and be depressed at the same time.
